Oviedo wins district boys volleyball title The Lions top Lake Mary 3-1 Thursday to claim first district title since 2005[/b][/i] By Brentley Romine Orlando Sentinel
Oviedo won its first district boys volleyball title since 2005 with a 3-1 win over Lake Mary Thursday night in the District 1 final at Oviedo.
Andrew Vidot posted 40 assists and Connor Bailey added 15 blocks in the Lions' 25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 25-13 win.
Oviedo (20-7) lost to Lake Mary twice during the regular season. The Rams (22-4) had won four of the past five District 1 titles.
"They hammered us 3-0 in both games during the regular season," Oviedo coach Rafael Valle said. "We wanted to be the most intense team. They came to play, but our intensity was just awesome against a great team."
The Lions will play at Bishop Moore Tuesday night in a first-round state play-in game.
The Hornets beat Berkeley Prep 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20) to win the District 2 title. Christian Franceschi had 31 kills and Chris de la Cruz added 22 digs for Bishop Moore (23-2).
Winter Park won the District 3 championship, beating Lyman 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) behind Ricardo Marquez's 15 kills and 3 aces. James Washington chipped in with 19 kills.
The Wildcats will play in a first-round state play-in game Tuesday at the winner of Dr. Phillips and Freedom, who play in the District 4 final Friday night at Cypress Creek.
