I don't even like OT! But...
The state championship was played last night in Lyman's gym so if you missed it because of the other match going on 10 minutes down the road sorry. Congratulations Olympia. To all other teams make sure you bring your school books to the state championship so that your trip will not be a complete waste of time.
Olympia looks nasty, Lyman has an awesome offense but Olympia's defense and block was sick. OT's offense played very smart but could use more fire power. A couple of those guys are going D1.
I say that if Olympia plays like they did against Lyman they crush Brother Rice, CG and the rest at the spring sting.
Olympia '08 vs Spanish River '06?
Any thoughts?

Possibly not D1, but you don't think Arthur will be getting into a decent school. He's definately a great player with a good attitude. Travis definately has a few years to get better I can see him in D2 or better.

Cmon man. Comparing Spanish River 06 to Olympia 08 results in a complete mismatch. I'm sorry but River 06 was better than Olympia 08 at every aspect of the game.

Really? Really?
You guys really need to change your opinions about Division 1 volleyball. Ian's a great player but hes the only one with the chance. Arthur is solid but hes short and a middle. Hes lightyears away from d1 volleyball. And Travis will be too short. Look at the MIVA and the setters were huge this year. And yah, PSU's was short, but he has some of the best placement I've ever seen.
Now that's not to say that others can't go on to play at the next level. D2/3 and NAIA are totally respectable.
and btw,
Olympia this year would get smoked off the court by Kyle and Gustavo in 3. Any team in the state this year would be crushed by them. Kyle and Gustavo were on a whole other level than the top players this year like Gage and Ian. Kyle is vying for a starting job at fricken Long Beach State. Do you know the level of volleyball that is played at that school?Have you seen the behemoths on the west coast? Not to mention hes on the JNT and was on the YNT.
Oh, and let's remember that Brother Rice is a top 10 team in Illinois, where there is consistently better volleyball. Their outside is on a club team thats a top 10 team in the nation. He'd easily be the best player in Florida. I really dont think Olympia would beat them. Sp. River lost 3 matches at the best of illinois tournament last year, to teams not even in the top 5 in Chicago and they were far and away the best in Florida.
Ian definitely has the potential however to get signed by a midwest or east coast d1. And I bet once he arrived on that the campus, hed get almost twice as good in 1 year with the coaching and weightlifting and such. If he works hard enough, I could see him eventually starting for a Rutgers or Mason or something.
Its going to be about getting himself known. Everyone has to recruit themselves.

the olympia vs spanish river question is ridiculous... i played against spanish river last year and there is no way ANYONE in the state of florida this year even takes a game off them. not to mention, olympia has simply advanced to states, not won it yet like SR did the past 2 years, although i do think they have a great chance of taking the title.

interesting all the conversation. what do you think about LM's chances? Robbie wants it. Ari can be a beast. James has power. Pat is a solid setter and defense shows signs of brillance.

Compared to the competition, they have a good shot. I'd love to see a CF final. Too bad the last couple years both teams were on the same side of the bracket.
But I agree with Norton. Teams from back in the day, such as the Northeast teams with Keawe and Grotowski, The Southwest team that won the first title, Gibbons with Mark and Brett, TC back with Arturo and his bunch, Cypress with Ricardo, BM when Mike was around, would all roll over the teams this year. No offense to guys like Arthur and Paul Wise and whoever is considered middles these days, but Ricardo and Mike would bounce ten foot line over them all day. Not to mention the 2 Highland teams from Arizona.

Good luck Olympia.
I feel bad for all the great teams of the past like TC and Northeast and BM and Lake Howell with Jaime and CG before they could get out of district, who had teams better than them and so didnt get to win states, when they would slaughter teams this year....

no one but ian has a chance to go d1. travis cant set on 16-1s and arthur didnt even make 18s when they kept a bunch of guys. yes olympia might win states but its cuz of blocking and what ian does for the team. and that is a joke question. so many teams in '06 would beat the crap out of the state championship team this year

1. Arthur isn't a middle 2. You honestly think the only reason Olympia is good is because of ian, sure he is a HUGE asset to the team. but EVERY player on that team steps up when it be necessary. So give props where props are due 3. No ONE can say 100% that any team would be beat by a past team unless the two faced off in present time. That is completely ridiculous. Although i've seen Gustavo and Kyle play, and i understand you're reasoning, but you cannot foresee something like that. so just chill with that. 4. I'm not dissing on anyone, but I find it sickening some of the crap I see on here.. It's ok to be real, but let's keep the undermining of a team to a minimal. Just congratulate Lake Mary and Olympia and be done with it. Maybe a "a couple" wont be goingD1.. but im sure they'll take D2 or 3 anyday..would you like to know why. Those kids LOVE volleyball. N the love of the sport is what gets you far, the skill and talent only come with it.

You forgot to mention Lake Mary back in the day.
Tim Spencer had like 500 kills against much better competition at OH. The man was MVP of East Coasts as a middle. He would have a field day on teams this year.

This has definately gone OT (thats off topic for those of you who may think it stands for something else!)
The great teams of old could have and probably would have beaten today teams, but i'd say across the board, the average school is better at volleyball than they were 6-10 years ago.
More kids are playing club, and more kids are playing beach. Its just blind luck or sly recruiting when those players end up on the same teams. And when it happens you will have a team equal or better than the teams of the past.
Years ago, clubs were basically formed from 1-4 schools. Orlando Gold is represented by 20 different schools!(See list below)
In the end, everyone has to get better in order for the state to become a powerhouse like Cali and others. We are on the right track.
This should be a heck of a State Championship. Great Parity and great competition.
ORLANDO GOLD SCHOOLS Apopka High Bishop Moore Cypress Creek High Good Shepherd Lake Brantley High Lake Highland Prep Lake Howell High Lake Mary High Lake Mary Prep Leesburg High Lyman High Olympia High Oviedo High Sebastian River High Seminole High Timber Creek High University West Orange High Winter Park High Winter Springs High
