Before this tournament I wasn't sure how much talent there would be this year. Although it is a down year, I was impressed with many teams and players.
My Observations:
Brother Rice 1st Place Very fundamentally sound team. Key Players: OH 23 - Best all-around player in the tournament. The kid gets up and has a great fundamentals. Swings high and hits the ball at the top of his swing allowing him to hit over the block. May not pound every ball but knows how to generate kills by hitting the holes. S 2 - Best setter in the tournament. Good hands. A tad bit inconsistent but makes up for it with smart decisions. Generates 1 on 1s and keeps his hands high at all times. Opp 30 - Very underrated IMO. Puts up a big block. Can get points from both the front row and back row. Excellent hands when taking the second ball. Good float serve.
Jupiter Didn't get to see them play that much but when I did, I was impressed because I wasn't expecting much. Seemed pretty decent all-around. Key Player: OH 7 - Kid gets up. Good out of the back row. Great all-around player. I wish I saw more of them.
Oviedo Also a better team then what I expected. Key Players: Seth and Taylor - Another team I didn't get to see much of but these two swung well when I was watching.
Spanish River Ironically a good all-around team. Probably overlooked a bit since Kyle and Gus are gone but these kids are good too. Key Players: MB's 34 and 11 - Both of these kids have improved a lot since I last remember. Both impressed me when they were in the back row (who needs a libero?). Best play was a slide facial by 34.
Bishop Moore Without their main guy I think they learned how everyone plays a role and gets the job done. Key Players: Sam OH 11 - Heart and soul of the team this weekend. Pounded and tooled all weekend. Decent out of the back row. Dan L 3 - Went unnoticed but only because he was constantly passing dimes and getting digs. Gets the team pumped.
Cardinal Gibbons Never fail to perform at the Spring Sting and this year wasn't an exception. Key Players: S 15 - Good hands and placement. Knows who to go to. OH 2 - The kid got a lot better and still hasn't reached his ceiling IMO. Good ups and solid passing.
Other Players: Kevin S 1 - University MB 23 - Douglas Chase OH 7 - Seminole Brian S 1 - Cypress Creek Brett OH 6 - TC (One of the best at the tournament) Caleb S 10 - Apopka (Same thing as Brett, this kid is really good at everything)

In case you were wondering, this is how the tournament would have been seeded based upon the results of the tournament. Would have been interesting to have CG and BM in the Semis to see who got to play Brother Rice? At least the way it worked out, BM and CG each had their shot at Rice.... and each beat Palmetto. I hope to see CG vs BM in the JQ.
Pool A Brother Rice (Chicago, Illinois) University (Orlando) Apopka Coral Springs
Pool B Bishop Moore (Orlando) Spanish River (Boca Raton) Douglas (Parkland) Seminole (Sanford)
Pool C Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale) Timber Creek (Orlando) Cypress Creek (Orlando) Seminole Ridge (Loxahatchee)
Pool D Miami Palmetto Jupiter Monsignor Pace (Miami)

Wow a whole bunch of folks beat me to this Tournament summary at www.floridavolleyball.com/HighSchool/TourneyBMC.phpOkay have doubled check my entries for Spring Sting and I think they jive with the official tourney results. New rankings have been generated. Only 1 undefeated team left -- OLYMPIA -- But still not #1 If they win Jungle Queen next weekend they may be the NEW #1

Brother rice was not amazing, but a lot stroger than what we are use to in fl. no one took a set from them, palmetto was incredible bishop more impressed by sam davis#11, jupiter very strong sr. players, but a weak setter, pace young and need of better coaching, c.g always strong excellent setter, douglas needs a good setter to make the height look good, s.r hard working team.

To be frank, I don't believe we saw all that Brother Rice was capable of. They are no doubt a great team, but they seem to have untapped potential that we weren't able to tap into. It would be awesome to play them again.

To be frank, I'm going to agree w/ arthur. I think Brother Rice has more talent then what we saw. All in all, the tournament was a lot of fun and had great results. Congrats BM on getting so far w/ out one of your key players. That same thing happened to us over winter season haha. Anyone that was on 18-1s im sure will remember. D Walsh had the "flu" LOL
