Columbus makes a big surge from #18 to #3 with a big tournament win this weekend at the Southwest Miami Invitational.

Spanish River has lost one match all year.
Finals of the SW tourney. They lost in 3 to Columbus.
Columbus has been playing a lot and winning.
Me thinks the rankings have everyone about where they should be.
If a team is off by one or two spots, that is not a big deal at the moment.
Everyone has Killian ranked higher but they have not yet played very many games.
Remember the poll rewards you for what you have done not your potential.
In about another week the rankings will be pretty solid.

I just think Olympia should be higher but i know its cause they havent played as many games as everyone else. They'll be shining really soon though.

I guess I am not a smart as the computer... but Olympia hasn't lost and has beat the #1 team, the former #4 team and every other team they faced. What will it take for them to move up after winning, rather than down?

Post by David Crowder on Mar 17, 2008 12:16:45 GMT -4
Technically speaking, Olympia stayed the same. Their rating is the same because they did not play this weekend.
Spanish River & Columbus both played a tourney this weekend and pass Olympia.
As soon as Olympia starts piling up the matches they will quickly improve their rating and their ranking.
As stated before the early season rankings pretty much tell you who the good teams are not necessarily the order.
Orlando the top two teams are Lyman & Olympia with Boone, Timber Creek, Lake Mary, Winter Springs & Bishop Moore chasing
Palm Beach top teams are Spanish River & Jupiter
Broward - Cardinal Gibbons Cooper City, Suncoast are doing well
Miami - Columbus, Southwest, Killian, Palmetto & Sunset are doing well
As always #1 is never decided until the last game has been played.

Okay first of all Boone is completely garbage. anyone who has seen them play will agree. and some how these rankings still don't add up. do the math people, if 2 team win every single match they play, 1 winning all 3 out of 5 matches, and 1 winning 2 tournaments along the way.....the team that played in the tournament can never catch up. enough said....rankings are crap
the real volleyball players know who's good and who isn't. certain teams that didn't even make it to the Gold division of theGirl's R UStournament (which would put them 5th or 6th in just that one tournament) are being mentioned with Lyman and Olympia as a top contender in the state. i mean, unless they got a LOT better in the last 2 weeks, then someone's been sipping on grandpa's cough-medicine

haha. thats a little harsh "somedude". dave doesn't make up these rankings, the scores rank themselves. as he's explained before, each match has a wager, with the higher teams bringing in more points. and each team is only allowed a certain number of matches a year, so it is possible to catch up, and playing less tournaments and more three game matches will move you up quicker. it is true that the two tournament team may never catch up, thats just how the points add up, but all that matters is who is beating who. we all know that. everyone needs to stop looking at these rankings like they are the final written in stone words of god. it changes continually

Mr. somedude,
Well the rankings maybe crap but it is the best thing to come along since:
Oreo cookies & milk, white slice bread, & pretty girls. And of course I like all three actually 4 if you count the rankings.
A comparasion of ranking systems.
NFL & MLB baseball would not have Olympia #1 they would have Lyman or Columbus #1 with Olympia a game and half back minimum
The BCS had LSU #2 but they played and won.
NCAA tourney how often does the #1 seed win the tourney? for that matter any of the top 8 teams (the onsies and twosies )?
So as you see, the FloridaVolleyball Boy's HS poll parties with some very esteemed polls.
So lets all hear it for
oreos, milk, pretty girls, white slice bread, and the ranking system
Anything else would just be unAmerican Dave
On that note Vote early & Vote Often

If you are not going to appreciate all the work Dave is putting into this forum then you shouldnt even be part of the conversation. its too early to judge who is going to come out on top. I think Dave has said this from the beginning. as more matches are played and more tournaments are played, then we'll see who the best teams really are!

Hey Guys,
I am not picking a fight with somedude. This is fun stuff for me. I was just joshing with him on his comments. Having fun there too.
Every ranking system is flawed ...that is why they play the games.
This one has merits and it has some things that just ain't right. Nothing I do to tweak it will make it perfect.
What I do like about this system is that you can rank all the teams that play.
No other ranking system for any high school sport even tries this, so this system does give eveyone an idea of where they stand in relation to everyone else.
It is the glass half full or half empty problem. Do you see the good that it does or do you see the "problem" areas.
For me it is fun stuff. Just what volleyball should be. Even with a little bit of smack talk thrown in.

I think the next step in the ranking system is to get a coaches poll going. If the coaches could rank the teams and that somehow got factored in to the equation, there might be more accuracy to the poll early in the season. Look at the way it all ended up last year. Pretty dead on... Do you still have the final top 10 from last year? Dave you must find a way to do this for the girls season next year!!!

i think the rankings are fun and dave puts alot of work into it...he explained it to me last year at the bishop moore spanish river game and its all about numbers...boone is up there because theyre going through the cake party of their schedule and will start to drop when they face real competition...
i played for dr. phillips last year and we sat in the lower teens for most of the season and made a run at the end...when all is said and done its all about how you play on the court...
some of you are taking this stuff way to seriously...this is just a fun tool to see what other schools are doing and i just wish we had this a few years ago becuase the paper doenst usually report all the scores and we never knew what teams from down south were doing...
so dont knock dave for what he does...
