The Douglas team is made up of 1 senior, 3 juniors and the rest of the team is freshman and sophomores. The senior is their setter but a freshman this year will be taking over that roll next year. Seven out of eight regularly rotated players in the starting lineup will be back next year. Junior - Charlie Brown - 6'3" Junior - Alex Horowitz - Libero 5'8" Junior - Justin Haas - 6'3" Sophomore - Shane Welch (Big Red) - 6'9" Sophomore - Jay Feldman - 6'1" Sophomore - Jesse Henry (Jessman) - 6'5" Freshman - Aaron Klein - 6'0" Don't under estimate this team. They may be young and easily frazzled by bad calls and early mornings but I would match their talent against anyones. They haven't had adequate competition this year, which has been their biggest handicap. Their only competition has been in the tournaments and they lost a couple of games they should of won. Some notably matches besides their win over Olympia have been against Southwest (really good team) early on in the season during their first tournament. They beat Southwest the first game but couldn't maintain the intensity. At the Bishop Moore tournament they went up against Jupiter. This game they should have won. They outplayed Jupiter but lost 24-26 in both games. This was an early morning game and like the game against Bishop Moore, these young kids can't get their act together early in the morning, the were comatose! Bottom line is they are just learning how to win. They are also getting a taste for it, important! One thing I can say if you really want to see a game, is next Tuesday Douglas plays Gibons on Gibons home court. Douglas is really excited about this game. Let's see if they show up to play vball ... flsandman - (a Douglas parent)

You are wrong about some statements: First- there are a lot of players on Douglas that played Club. In fact, 5 of the starting 6 has Club experience. Sons, CFV and OBV. Second- It appears the new coach does have a few problems with the some of the players, but I feel she will correct them in the future. Third- The team gets along great. All of the players are friends on and off the court. There is never fights amoung each other. Fourth- If you pulled your kid out of Douglas because of the boys volleryball team then you are taking volleyball way to seriously. Douglas is a top A school and there are always kids trying to get in.

The coach from last year that turned this team around and won the district title is the coach this year. She has done an incredible job with kids no one else wanted or looked at. If you have watched Douglas (boys) Volleyball closely this year you would see how much she has put into the program and how far they have come in such a short time. She is an incredible coach who I would love to have my kids under.

This team has improved so much compared to last year PLUS most of them will be there next year. DOUGLAS is a team to watch this year plus next year.

I know this from experience because... a few years back I actually switched my children out of this school district because of the AD and the poor coaching staff for the boys volleyball. Idiot get a life parent

This is just an opinion from watching this team for many years or should say school... First - this school has not had a good coach for many years so this brings low raitings for the team now. A consistancy of miss managed coaching. The AD has not put a lot of effort to build this team - like the baseball, soccer, or football team they have Second - in the past year the coach from a club walked away with the teams blessing and was replaced by another coach who turned the boys around and they won their districts last year. Third - last year they only lost 2 seniors... a growing team with players who have no experience in club etc. No support from the people in the school either. No team / school spirit. Fourth - this year the boys are young in age only 1 senior and the rest is above stated with a "sex god of a libero" also, I believe when everyone one is saying young, it goes back to having no experience. No club playing except now for a few players and a couple others who are considering. Fifth - the coach this year appears to be having poor controll over the boys as was seen clearly at some tournaments lately. They fight on the court which as anyone knows takes away the focus on the game being played. There is no unity or respect for each other, they show immaturity. That also meaning "being a young team". This team has potential to become big with the proper coaching (not the one they have now she cant handle them) and bonding as a team. They need to get over their petty little behavior problems and play ball. Sure hope this answered your question about being young. I know this from experience because... a few years back I actually switched my children out of this school district because of the AD and the poor coaching staff for the boys volleyball. WHAT ARE YOU RETARDED? FIRST OFF YOUR OPINON DOESNT MATTER. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFOR YOU COME ON HERE AND THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. THE COACH WHO TOOK OVER LAST YEAR AND SAVED THEM IS COACH NEWMAN AND INCASE YOU DONT KNOW NOW, ITS THE SAME COACH THAT IS WITH THEM NOW. I AGREE THAT THEY HAVE SOME FLAWS AND THAT THEY ARE ACTING LIKE SPOILED BRATS. BUT COACH NEWMAN HAS PUT EVERYTHING SHE HAS INTO THESE BOYS AND I DONT THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY SHE HAS NO CONTROL OVER THESE BOYS OR THAT SHE IS NOT QUALIFIED TO COACH THEM. IF IT WERENT FOR COACH NEWMAN THESE BOYS WOULD BE IN WORSE SHAPE THEN BEFOR. LAST YEAR WAS PROOF SHE HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THIS TEAM STATE CHAMPIONS BUT PERHAPS THEIR IMMATURITY AND BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS ARE THINGS THAT THEIR PARENTS NEED TO HANDLE AT HOME AS WELL AS ON THE COURT AND NOT THE COACH. THEN AGAIN THEY ARE BOYS, AND IF YOU THINK THAT BOYS WONT FIGHT YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT HAVE BOYS OR DONT REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR KIDS AND ITS NOT JUST DOUGLAS BOYS WHO FIGHT, ITS ALL OF THE TEAMS. NONE OF THEM ARE A PERFECT TEAM. YOU ALSO OBVIOUSLY DONT KNOW THIS TEAM. I THINK THE BOYS HAVE GREAT CHEMISTRY TOGETHER OFF THE COURT AND IF THEY PUT IT ALL TOGETHER ON THE COURT I GUARANTEE THEY COULD BE UNSTOPPABLE. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE COACH NEWMEN. I DONT PLAY FOR HER BUT I HAVE A LITTLE EXPERIENCE WITH HER AND HAVE SEEN HER COACH ON AND OFF THE COURT. SHE IS AN AMAZING ATHLETE HERSELF AND SOMEONE I LOOK UP TO.

As an alumnus of MSD, it is unfortunate to hear such negativity surrounding the program that gave me the opportunity to play the game that I now have coached for the past 8 years.
First off, To the current coach, thank you for your hard work and dedication. You are passionate about the game of volleyball, and you go above and well beyond coaching to collect a stipend. She is passionate about the game and has been willing to take them out of the area to play in tournaments on the weekend. She campaigned for the State Tournament and got it! Would you like to have states on the same court you practice on everyday? There are many teams that would kill to have a coach as passionate as she is. Give her time, and respect, and she will be successful.
When I went to Douglas, I had 3 different head coaches during my 4 years. The first year, we had practices that lasted less than an hour because our team was so disgusting with George Romain, Chris Hindson, Kurt Kendell, Keegan Roper. Those guys pretty much beat every team with ease. To this day, I believe it was the best team to ever play in Florida. 4 All Americans played on that team, and George was on the Olympic B Team as a Junior in High School! I am sure some will debate it, but trust me this was the best team to ever play in Florida.
The following year we had a different coach. Obviously in rebuilding mode, we needed someone who would help teach basic skill along with advanced volleyball skill. Remember Broward County does not allow JV teams so the varsity coach has to do it all. We were very competitive that year but finished 3rd in the county tournament.
My Junior and Senior year, we had Walt Drexl (currently the coach at Monarch High School) Coach had a tough task in front of him keeping attitudes in check while continuing the tradition of Douglas volleyball. Coach Drexl has come a long way since those days, and I commend him for all that he has given up over the years to help volleyball in Broward grow.
The one thing that has been consistent at Douglas has been change. Not every program can have a Luise Crocco! If I would have returned to South Florida after college, I can assure you that I would have returned to Douglas and given back to that program, but who knows how long I would have stayed.
If players want to get better in high school, you cant rely on 2 months of coaching to get the job done. You need to play outside of the high school season. the 1994 Douglas Team was not dominant because they had phenomenal coaching, they were great because they had tremendous athletes that played club when nobody else did. The undefeated Gibbons team had more experience in 2 beach players than combined experience of each team in the state. (however they would have been whooped by the '94 Douglas team)
Let your coach put in the lineup. Let them coach you in practice. Let them teach you how to be a good teammate. Great coaching does NOT make a great team.
Douglas has a good coach this year. She cares about the kids and she is doing her best to help guide the young men in there lives. God forbid she actually reads this board, and Douglas might find themselves in a worse situation next year with a team with nobody to coach them.

douglas definately has the talent to beat any team out there..when their on..however this rarely happens..douglas does not have the coaching, experiance, or maturity needed to go all the way. They have a huge middle and two great outsides and a decent setter but the only one playing defense is #11..they are an extremely young team with a coach that cannot handle them at all! if their coach can get some control and this team can start playing to their potential, their is no doubt that they can be a major competitor for the state tournement. If not, watch out for douglas next year. Theyre gonna be stacked!
