tcwolf, imagine if dade county had the club set up that central florida has... hardly anyone from dade county plays club at all, these are just athletes with good coaches, not club players that play year around. southwest had absolutely nobody that played club. palmetto had one guy that got picked up by club florida for last years jos (not a full season of club). killian had a few guys try to play boomers but i dont think that ever went through. columbus had three players play for the sons. sunset and had nobody play club. ransom took one team to east coast last year. coral park had 3 guys that played for the sons. and that is it! the closest thing is the sons and it takes almost an hour to get to practice for most dade kids cause it is run out of broward county. i wish our kids had the opportunity to play year around, but there is nothing structured here like that. my hats off to you guys up there for how organized and well developed you are (as a club program, both gold and lyman club), and yes the sons are trying to catch up. but as high school teams go, we still are the dominant programs untill you guys can do something about it. and if we get club going down here, watch out!

I guess I'll throw my two cents in...
First of all, congrats to my alma mater for once again bringing the state title back home. It's been a long time coming to get back to the top, with many talented teams and players that for various reasons came up short.
Today's championship epitomized what Southwest is not just as a team, but as a program: you had alumni dating back as far as the 2000 GMAC championship (back when that was the furthest a Dade team could go) out there today supporting the guys, and it was great to see.
Coach Diaz and company have an uncanny knack for developing a group of individuals into a functional unit. To be perfectly candid, looking across the net today Olympia had more size across the board and more natural athletes: a greater collection of individuals if you will. Despite maybe not having the most impressive-looking group of players when they walk into the gym, the SW program tends to change those opinions when you roll the ball out on the court.
Being in the state championship tournament four out of the six years, and winning it all two of those years, is nothing to scoff at. Say what you will about the level of volleyball in CFla being better (and there's definitely a salient argument to be made that it is), but you really can't knock the tradition that SW has developed: gotta give credit where credit is due.
Speaking of which, much credit to Olympia as well. Midway through the fifth set I turned to an old teammate of mine and noted that whoever won the match would have to do it by literally just being the last one to gasp for air. It was that intense and competitive a match, and hats off to both teams for being so gritty. There were points where either group could have folded, be it from officiating (which was terrible on both sides) or a big play from their opponent, and neither did. So tremendous respect to both groups for that.
Since I realize my two cents has turned into about twenty dollars, I'll cut my rambling here.
Congrats once again to Southwest, and get well soon Nick. I've never met the kid or seen him play, but his situation is something that transcends volleyball. To be his age and in that situation is a heart-wrenching thing for he and his family. Hope everything turns out alright.

I have to agree that cf has had an all around good base when it comes to teams, it just sucks that we're only alloted 2 spots in the state tournament when south florida gets 6 spots. This has been the first year (i think) that cf teams havent been in the same bracket before the finals. last year dp and lm would have faced in the semis, i think that any solid cf team could beat a south team, because we have just as much heart and skill as they do. any team can be beaten on any day. Im so sick of hearing that CF is only alloted 2 spots. newsflash idiots you are a big city thats it just like miami. miami is alotted 2 spots they too like orlando are a big city with great volleyball. you arent central florida you are an area of it called orlando

i agree with you there tcwolf! orlando is well represented each year with numerous teams, as is dade county. broward always has somebody at the top level between gibbons st thomas mccarthy. spanish river always represents well for west palm, but there is nobody that competes with them there. and jupiter finally did a decent job representing this year cause their region is normally a joke.
it isnt fair to compete all of south florida to central. so dade county, broward, and palm beach should all represent their own.
dade- 2 state titles west palm- 2 state titles (river back to back) orlando/ central florida- 1 state title broward- 1 state title
looks kind of even to me...

Olympia played great, and to come back how they did in the fourth game showed that they really wanted to be there. And it would be questionable about the playing conditions, there was no air condition on during the finals , and with south Florida teams being more suseptible to playing in warmer weather one may call it a conspiracy. Also the refs made some questionable calls, and S.W. Miami knows the calls I'm talking about. All in all it was a great game. And best of luck to all teams next season.

yes there were some questionable calls both ways. but olympia is a bunch of cheaters! their setter was back row and dumped it and then told the big lefty to go play back row to confuse the refs and make it look like he was in the front row. after 5 mins they figured out he was in the back row but decided to call a replay, thats bull! and im sorry but the refs handed olympia that fourth set, so i dont know what your talking about sw knowing a certain call. the most crucial bad calls came in the end of that fourth set!

I would have paid money to see there setters face when they lost Oh man was I cracking up at that kid during the River vs Olympia game he was spazzing out over every call. travis is a player that actually puts his all into every point and cares about this sport alot, so dont put him down or make fun of the way he acts.

Hey- what's with all the sour grapes and dissing the other regions in Florida....First of all, we are probably ten years behind the parts of the country where the game has more support. We don't need to be petty- we need to keep training and keep getting better...Every club that improves, every high school that gets better just helps our whole state. Our ball control, our unforced errors, and the level of setting in our state has a long long way to go... Secondly, no playoff system is ever perfect. There will always be an area that might have several championship level teams in one year, while another region might be in a down year, but that happens in any sport.... So congrats to the teams that did their jobs and made it through. So all you wannabees that keep trashing these teams, try backing it up next year by actually winning when it counts! And what is all this talk about players being thingyy? Who cares. If a player is confident and back it up, more power to them! The best answer if that bothers you is to beat them...So if you want to do something about it- get out and play!!

columbus, like many miami teams have many athletes in other sports, volleyball is a 2nd or 3rd sport. while many orlando players have facilities and can play year round (i.e.Girl's R USand other facilites for volleyball, we do not have any). in the beginning of march when the dr.philips tournament was played it was literally miami dade's second week of practice since last april. while most orlando teams are in mid to late season form. orlando is dedicated to the sport and has made it more popular (a really good thing). After a few months of practice It goes without saying miami can compete with year round orlando volleyball. As both players from s fla and c fla would admit olympia won the quaterfinal game on the worst call I have seen in a while (as well as all the spectators would agree) it should have been 15-15 in 5th set. The game should have benn decided by earning the following two points not on one bad call. Olympia played a great game and is an excellent team, but columbus' character and TALENT was showcased by coming back from 0-2 and fought off 2 matchpoints in the 3rd set .There are obviously 2 very strong teams in orlando (OT, LYMAN), possibly a 3rd in lake mary At least 5 teams in Miami are at the same level if not higher than your two strongest teams NOW!!!(when it counts). By the way, the deserving state champs only 2 loses came from miami teams (columbus, palmetto).
This response was only made because of the lack of respect given to a TALENTED team and program. lets practice on building volleyball up and not tearing teams apart.

shut up. you dont kno s*it. columbus is not good and were lucky olympia played a bad game vs them. and we have more strong teams then that. and lake mary isnt really considered a strong team here. bm tc ws(2 out of 3) and probally even university are all equal or better then lake mary. most central fl teams would beat miami teams. just 1 of your teams won it. so how about you shut up and act like your the governer of miami and talk about central fl like you saw all the teams here play when you didnt. the competition here is huge. out of the 4 districts, 3 of the 2 seeds ended up winning districts
