I agree with a lot of things said from everyone...i like what the cp coach was talking about, i dont teach swing blocking either because it takes a lot of body control to do that, body control that most kids this age dont have...but i do agree at the highest level it is a must to get as high as you can. High school kids just need to learn a solid, non complex base of technique and understanding of the game for when they get to a higher level, they can build on that to accomodate whatever style of coaching they recieve. I personally dont like GMS...Ive used it before and found that for the basic skills, passing, defense, setting, hitting it does not work well at the high school level...but thats just my personal experience...others may find it to be a godsend...everyones experience is different i guess with it...ive been taught a different way and all my knowledge comes from arguably one of the best coaches around from Reid at Killian...Its just whatever works for you, if GMS brings you results and takes you to districts and regionals than cool, but I know we dont use it...coral park doesnt (or i dunno anymore but when jimmy and rob were there), southwest and sunset as well as palmetto who have been the top teams the past 5 years. but hey to each his own...its great that Miami Elite is starting something....no one else down here has...I just took a couple of my boys out to Weston for the sons because I know the coaches and they run a tight ship out there...but you cant beat the price elite is giving u and its right down the street...anyone know if theyre taking a team to east coasts in virginia? how about JO's? just wondering what tournaments there going to? and yeah if garnett was playing middle his nuts would be over the net, imagine lebron playin outside??? straight up power hahaha

Hey, lay off the national team. ;D I am excited to see how the Mens National Team will do this year at the Olympics. Even if they haven't won any gold medals lately, they still have a pretty good team and they are HUGE. Their average height at the net is 6'8 and they have been playing well lately- maybe if our best athletes played volleyball we would be at the top- MJ and Vince Carter at OH? Kevin Garnett in the middle? Lebron playing wherever he wants? I do agree that the level of competition should dictate your play, but that is what adjustments are for. For instance, I dont teach swing blocking at the high school level because there is really no need for it. In addition, you need some really good, rangy middles to do that well. But you HAVE to it at the high level. The important thing is to play year round, that seems to be the way to be successful if you don't have overwhelming firepower. I have to disagree with you about having Kevin Garnett in the middle i think Dwight Howard would be a little more athletic...

swing blocking? are you kidding me what is swing blocking? ( i know what it is)
ok let me explain high school volleyball in a nutshell.
ive got 17 games of data (and counting) about something i once said in a practice to the killian boys. i hadnt planned what i was gonna say so i just started jabbering and my god did it come out nicely. " The team that wins the first touch over a prolonged period of time will win the match". So what exactly does this mean? Well it means if the serve is better then the recieve well then the chances of the serving team maintaining serve is high and if the pass is better then the serve well then the recieving team has a very good chance of siding out.
yeah you guys can all call me geeks it's ok. On to the data...
1. When the serve ( team A ) is better then the pass ( team B )
chance of team A winning the point - 48% chance of team B winning the point - 52%
2. When the pass ( team B ) is better then the serve ( team A )
chance of team A winning the point - 21% chance of team B winning the point - 79%
so what am i trying to show?
The chances of team A winning the point when there serve is better then the pass increases dramaticly. They probably received a free ball or down ball over the net which makes "swing blocking" or "defense" a non-factor.
Team B sided out almost 4/5 of times when there pass was better then the serve. So if Team B can serve the ball well and get lots of free balls over the net, there chances of winning go up dramatically!
And this means...
The point is won or lost on the first two touches of the game.
Therefore...
Maybe we as coaches should do a better job of teaching these simple skills instead of worrying about more advanced skills.

One of the best analysis post I have seen. I'll be checking this out for my teams and stealing it if it is true...

That is a great study if proven true. And if we had the best athletes play... OH - Vince Carter, Josh Childress MB - Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett Opp - LeBron James S - Dwayne Wade L - Jason Kidd

I actually put Nash at libero when I decided to take him off because he is Canadien and we were talking about the Olympic team. Move Garnett to OH and put Amare at middle with Dwight and Marcus Camby. That would be sick.
