Word on the street is that Miami Elite Volleyball Club will have a boy's volleyball club this summer. They are having a work out on Wednesday 5/14. Someone told me it was going to be very inexpensive to join.

when i heard they were starting a club i had mixed feelings bc they coach with the gold medal squared stuff which i dont really like at all, I have my own way to teach things and so far have been successful and i feel like GMSquared thing doesnt do the job well. But at the same time I was like well any boys club is better than no club. So i was gonna send my boys out there, then i found out the florida christian coach was coaching and I said no WAY. I think if Kevin Carr was doing it then Id let em go there...but Im real picky about who coaches the kids I coach bc I dont want to have to reteach everything when they come back to me. I know that sounds super hard headed or thingyy but Ive worked with gold medal squared on more than one occasion and dont agree with anything it teaches at all...not the technique teachings, not the defensive system...nothing...a friend of mine put it the best way...its an organized way of playing disorganized volleyball. So be weary. All props to them for trying to get something started though, if you have the facilities, time and coaches your ahead of the game...not many ppl have any of these things or the time for it. good luck with it miami elite.

I was at the try-outs for Miami Elite Boy's Volleyball club. Coach Alvarez (Florida Christian) is coaching the boy's program and Scott and Julie Doan are the directors. There are a couple of coaches there also they played at Florida Christian last season. There were a lot of SW and Florida Christian players as well as some kids from Varela, Killian, and Sunset. The age groups will be determined as the players commit / selected. As far as the Gold Medal Squared thing is concerned I have no idea what you mean...tell us more about that. It seemed to be an excellent practice/try-out and the boy's really enjoyed it.

I play college with the Gold medal square crap thing and IT DOeSNT WORK... it really doesnt i dnt even know why coaches lyk tha technique. We started to use that at the beginning of our season and our middle back always got burned!. No oneis going to hit straight down at a high level of volleyball...they either hit high hands or deep conrners. w.e if it works for you guys more power to you..

As far as explaining what I do not agree with in the Gold Medal Squared there are many many things to which i have to disagree. I have taught the gold medal squared as an assistant coach and as a camp coach and cringed everytime I heard what I had to teach when it goes against everything I was ever taught. FOr example...the positions in home base...they play two steps in from the side lines and two steps behind the 10 foot line. they call middle back middle middle...left back left middle middle, and right back...you can guess it...right middle middle. The blocking home base is called bunch read...three blockers stand together in the middle of the court. What happens when a) you have a 6-4 setter who dumps the ball straight down into the middle of the huge hole created by there back row home base? do all three blockers jump with him??what happens when you have multiple hitters spreading the net? you have a right side shoot coming, a 31 coming, and a two ball coming? any way you look at it the block will be late bc they have to make a decision and eventually split off which leaves everyone not only one on one, but late to get there as well...they teach swing blocking as there preferred method...fine...but at a novice level kids tend to drift as they swing block...therefore moving away from the hitter...free ball...they teach left and right middle middle to drop back to the corners and middle middle come all the way to the front....(where the middle blocker should be transitioning to hit) ...the way they teach passing on serve recieve...wait for the ball with your arms together and if the ball comes to your side...instead of movin your feet, angle your arms to target and just face the ball...wtf is that....i find it doesnt teach you to move your feet...setting is the same thing face the ball and at the last second turn to target when i teach get to the ball first square up and set...it encourages kids to pancake when most coaches use that as a last resort bc they cant get there...i find lateral movement is so important in volleyball and basically this leaves that out... if you have high level players who have lots of experience and decision making is tight then maybe...but the system doesnt work for teaching novice players...thats just my opinion...

We are proud to announce that we are having another team selection on May 29th and May 30th at Florida Christian School from 6-9pm. We are very excited to have a boy's volleyball club in Miami. We are definitely using Gold Medal principles and we are sorry that some people don't agree with it. It is hard to argue with the fact that Pepperdine University, University of Washington, Penn State, and BYU, have won national titles using their methods. As well as many others from 12U Clubs to USA National Team. But that's o.k. you are entitled to your opinions. Feel free to send us your players, if they want to play we certainly want to coach. As for "Anon" and "Info" let me know if you want to go to a Gold Medal Coaches Clinic I'll take you and pay for it to!!

your sarcastic tone is TRULY appreciated...lots of class...from a head coach...i like it.
and Im sure that when pepperdine recruited there lefty all american from australia or w.e he was...he was taught vball using gm2...wrong...when you have high level players who are 6'9 and throw up a huge block and play defense like their life is on the line, pretty much any system a coach implements will work...College and national team is about recruiting man...if you have the best players nothing else matters. at that level they have the experience and the reading ability to judge a situation and be in the general vicinity of where the ball should be.
and how many gold medals has the US mens won lately?? k great thx

Hey, lay off the national team. ;D I am excited to see how the Mens National Team will do this year at the Olympics. Even if they haven't won any gold medals lately, they still have a pretty good team and they are HUGE. Their average height at the net is 6'8 and they have been playing well lately- maybe if our best athletes played volleyball we would be at the top- MJ and Vince Carter at OH? Kevin Garnett in the middle? Lebron playing wherever he wants? I do agree that the level of competition should dictate your play, but that is what adjustments are for. For instance, I dont teach swing blocking at the high school level because there is really no need for it. In addition, you need some really good, rangy middles to do that well. But you HAVE to it at the high level. The important thing is to play year round, that seems to be the way to be successful if you don't have overwhelming firepower.
