Okay looks like it is time for me to chip in on this thread. Generally, when I do the thread comes to an end because I have said all that needs to be said or folks just don't really want to be associated with what I have to say because it is embarassing for them...that is a ha ha moment guys...
First off, all I know about this situation is what I have read here on the message board. I have no other insight what so ever.
As a referee over the years (23 if I remember correctly, some of you try to count after you have use all your toes and fingers) and a player for a tad bit longer:
I have jammed many a finger blocking but the worst jam was getting hit by a errand ball in the thumb in pre-game warm ups. It swelled up big and good. So good that night that I was the setter and we won.
I have sprained my ankle a bunch. And I still do not believe ankle braces are good for you. My opinion many will disagree with.
I have been six packed twice. One time I lost vision in an eye for about 30 minutes. Thank you Daniel...he doesn't read the message board so when I say the ball went back over the net for my kill you all have to believe me...and if you ask how I know with only one eye...I have no explanation for that...but it is what I saw...
As a referee I have had the lenses knocked out of my glasses numerous times and always at a girl's match never at a boy's match....is this because girls hit harder than boys or because boys have more control?
At an adult league one of the "ADULTS" was mad about a call. He served at me on the stand...he missed me (he was a crappy server as well as player and I hope he is reading this message board) and I did not flinch but this near death experience made me an expert on this guys genealogy....I instantly knew where his momma, daddy, brother sister and cousins all came from and it wasn't from Shreveport my friends...
On the stand I was once hit in the mouth by a hit coming off the block...that one hurt...ripped the whistle out of my mouth....when I went to the dentist several weeks later for routine check up he said I had a cracked tooth...he fixed it and Dave now eats at Sony's BBQ as often as he can...ribs chicken sliced pork...ate there last night...good stuff...tell em Dave sent you
With respect to the Westminster situation:
In all my years of reffing I have never seen a referee on the stand be hit directly in the face as described without it coming off a block. I have seen and heard of referees being knocked off the stand by players running into the stand. Did the player do it? I do not know and won't venture to say unless I saw the video and I was required to make an assessment in the situation.
Did the official deserve it? No nothing she has done or not done says she deserves to be hit in face. If she needs training as an official then her association needs to get involved and train her. Was she calling a good match? I do not know.
What is curious to me is that when she was hit in the face the first thing she did was get on the cell phone and call someone. if you were hurt wouldn't you first seek medical assistance from the trainer? Who was she calling? If she needed crowd control / player control assistance why did she not seek out assistance from the coaches and game administrators. Okay getting hit in the face HARD does sort of make folks not think logically or by the rule book.
Coaching staff being fired. Without all the facts this seems extreme. But I have to ask the following questions: what did the coaching staff do while the players were yelling at the referee previously?, what did the coaching staff do after the referee was hit in the face? was the coaching staff arguing calls that may have created an impression to the players they were being cheated? Ultimately, the school and the coaching staff are responsible for the actions of the kids. The buck stops with them no matter how incredible the situation. This is the price of leadership.
Expelling the player from school. Seems extreme without due process / trial being conducted. But that may have happened at the school that part of course the school, player, or parents will not discuss on this message board.
If indeed the player did intentionally hit the official in the face with the ball, he has committed a felony in the state of Florida. Assaulting a sports official has been addressed several years ago and the state of Florida (not FHSAA, the guys with guns and badges) will arrest and prosecute you. Since the player is 18 or very near 18 this could get very serious for him more serious than being expelled from school.
Okay guys, lets move on to another subject. The situation is serious and we need to let the experts resolve this matter. There are many missing pieces to the story that the parties actually involved in the situation can only answer. And they will not get on this message board to answer those questions.
The Palm Beach Classic is this weekend and there is going to be some pretty good ball being played. My Orlando teams are back in action down there and will see if the power shift has truly gone south after two years of domination by Central Florida.
Also for you guys that need to practice your doubles and lifts we having a charity grass and sand tourney at Lyman HS April 30. Fundraiser for a local volleyball family whose mother has cancer.
Keep it on the Courts guys!!!
