Why isn't there an evaluation process for coaches? I know there are coaches around the county who are unqualified.

well lake marys coaches last year didnt know anything either, you think river's coach knew wat he was doing? he had three all county selections for like 3 years...he walked into a good situation...just like lake marys coaches...from waht i hear there were basketball coaches...
thing is no one wants to coach, things get desperate that schools will take anyone to be the coach. teachers get another supplement in their pay check and they read up on there stuff...I agree a coaches evaluation would be in the best interest of the level of play but unrealistic...a lot of assistant coaches stay with their schools for years out of loyalty and they could be phenomenal head coaches.
also head coaches now have to be school faculty , no more contract head coaches, most people that know stuff and arent in the school system have other jobs and cannot sub for a couple days a week.
this is why there isnt any evaluations bc its hard enough to find anyone WILLING to do it, much less fire them if they aren't getting results

Just to give you guys a perspective on what it's like to be a coach: Head coaches are typically teachers and work at least 40 hour weeks. Teaching is a wonderful and rewarding profession, but it is also quite exhausting. Most teachers give up their free time to work with at-risk students, carry their personal burdens, help those in need achieve at a higher level, and worry worry worry. Aside from the limited time I have during the day to do my job, I must bring home papers to grade, attend parent conferences, and make sure my certification is up-to-date. A typical day for me begins at 5 AM and hopefully ends before 11 PM. Still, I chose this profession, so there is no one to blame but myself. I love my job, and I encourage all of you Seniors to consider it as a profession, but please know it is a lot of work. A typical teacher in our surrounding counties makes between $35-$50,000, depending upon their years of service. I have many seasons of coaching behind me and make just under $2,000 for the volleyball season. Sounds great, doesn't it? I am paid only during the season, but I'm sure your coach has had open gyms earlier in the year. Your coaches are making schedules, planning tournaments, ordering shirts and shoes well before they're actually getting paid. Once the season starts, things get hectic. Let's consider a typical week of 3 practices and 2 games. Practice runs for 2 hours, plus an hour for preparing, plus another hour of discussion with my coaching staff. On game day I'm typically at school a half hour before the bus leaves and there another half hour after we return to school. That's roughly 12 hours for practice and another 10-12 for games (unless your JV loves going 3 games!). I earn roughly $250 every two weeks for coaching, but it is taxed at a higher rate since it is considered a bonus. I see a paycheck increase of roughly $180 every two weeks during the season. That's considerably less than minimum wage, and I doubt many of you would have weekend jobs making so little while working that many hours. Aside from that I'm away from my wife and child, spend my weekends catching up on household chores, and lose contact with all friends outside of the volleyball world. Still, I do it every season because I love the sport and the kids involved. I'm a lifer. Why would someone want to get into coaching if they don't have previous experiences with the sport? Why not go and officiate (they make roughly $70 a night last I checked...two nights a week has me beat financially)? Oh, and your assistant or JV coach? They're making about half as much. You're right. It's hard enough to find someone who is willing to do the job, let alone do it well. And your parents? They're enough reason to make anyone want to quit! Lots of little negatives, but so many enormous positives. We don;t do it for the money or the glory or ouselves...we do it for you. We want to see you get better. We want to watch you become men. We want the highs and we want the lows. We want to make you winners. We want to be there through your experiences. My daughter already has a ball in her hands and I'm doing my best to encourage her to be a player. I will let her decide her future, but I cannot say a tear won't cross my cheek if she doesn't choose my love of volleyball. Please take this as nothing more than a new perspective on what it's like to be a coach. Thank them for their time. Tell them how much they've helped you. Bring 'em a Gatorade just for the heck of it. Just know we do it for you.

It's nice to get that perspective out in the open. And I know the players are grateful. Consider coaching girls club. Sad but it almost makes more sense to coach girls club financially then it is to coach high school anything.
Here is a fact many of you don't know. Any assistant football coach makes more than the head girls or boys varsity volleyball coach.
I coach volleyball because I love the game. People tell me I am a workaholic, but really, coaching for me is not work. It's play. I still play volleyball every chance I get. Coaching is just and extention of playing the game, and I am a much better player for coaching as many years as I have. Getting any money doing the thing I like doing in my spare time is awesome!
It's like getting paid to play video games.

HOWEVER, I know schools who have other staff members who are more qualified and WANT to coach, but the unqualified coach (who runs hitting lines or scrimmages at practice every day) won't give up the girl or guy's season. It seems there's a larger emphasis on the political side of coaching (who's friends with whom) than the success and best interest of the team. It's unfortunate for the kids. They deserve to be coached.

i'm so glad that Mike laid it out for you guys in such completness. that is our life in a nutshell. and some of us head coach the girls and guys not to mention going to camps with our girls in the summer and 2 seasons of Orlando Gold. i haven't had more than a week off of coaching in 2 years.....literally.
No good coach does it for the money - trust me. You players make it all worth it, though. I love to see other people loving the sport of volleyball and working hard to get better. not to mention watching you grow from little freshmen idiots into grown men with character and class (not ALL of you, but most). that is the best feeling in the world.
here's my advice to everyone - go thank your coach....especially if they aren't very good. at least they love you guys enough to be giving up their time to make you better. (this is coming from a guy who honestly had probably the world's worst coach and never thanked the guy once - wish i could go back and tell him thanks now).

Well, just to add my 2 cents worth to this discussion. Never really been a coach but I have refereed for about 20 years.
Most of my jobs prevented me from coaching do to time commitments. I stayed invovled with the sport by reffing.
Referees make $76 for a JV/V match ($40 for V, $26 for JV, $10 milage).
You must buy your own uniform and equipment. The pants & shoes you can wear any where, the shirt well only reffing.
Time commitment from the game depends on how good of a referee you want to be. You must practice practice practive. There really is no one to "coach" you on how to be a referee, it is pretty much all OJT (on the job training). You must be self motivated, and very confident in your decision making. Confident to the point of bing arrogant.
Generally at the end of a game half the folks like you and half the folks don't.
Reffing is a great job for college kids. Great way to make business contacts, make spending money, and stay invovled with your sport. And if you are good you will have more work than you can handle.

from a former players prospective...
coaching is one of the most rewarding things ive done, the only problem i have is the players that think that they are god....im just gonna say right now...dont ever get big headed...be humble and thank the people around you...without your coaches you would be nothing...you will get nowhere in volleyball if you guys dont shut your mouths and play...
it is better to be a silent assassin then to be a loud puff of air...

From a former player turned coach: Coaching is and always will be the most fulfilling experience i have ever had. I had the unique benefit of growing closer to my former teammates. And it truly gives you a whole new perspective on the game.
