To clarify, when I said best player, I was referring to setters for those of you who do not understand.

So.....you are claiming that this Aleks kid is more of a "pure setter" and Mike is just a "ball chucker"? If you think Mike is just a "ball chucker" then I am wondering if you have even seen him set.

I don't think I would call Aleks a kid anymore. I am 26 myself and he has me by about a year or so. Not sure what he is up to these days. Hopefully playing ball somewhere. And as a matter of fact, yes I did get the opportunity to see Mike in a match. To come to think of it, I had a pretty good view of it considering I was on the other side of the court. Have not had a chance to view his skills this year. Hoping to catch a web cast of one of the Flyers matches this year. The setter he was battling with for playing time last year had much better hands, but as I always tell my players, "You can't teach size," and Mike definitely has size which is a major advantage to the Flyers when attempting to stop those big outside hitters they face. I hope he leads them back to a Semifinal appearance. Dan Friend (the coach) definitely deserves this and has worked hard to get a good cast at Lewis after the "fallout."

Just to add my two cents into the discussion. I have reffed in Orlando for about 20 years and know most of the players mentioned here.
In my opinion, the best high school setter I saw was Will Lipscomb who played for Lake Mary in the 90s.
Justin Weeks from Oviedo was good too.
The Bonsian kid Alek (never knew his name) was good but had the problem on playing on a bad high school team, so he was asked to do more than set. In club ball he did come through, though this was a period of time when club ball was "down" or not as popular.
Mike Iandolo I can not say is the best setter from central Florida. He was good but because of his size and ability to hit compared to the rest of the Bishop Moore team, he never was able to excell at this position. He was forced to hit all away around cause that his what his team needed.
Lipscomb at Lake Mary had some of the better hitters in high school and club to ever come from Central Florida, as well as passers. So he always looked good and always played on the best teams.
Weeks from Oviedo is more the leader than Lipscomb. His Oviedo teams succeeded the great Lake Mary teams as the dominant teams in the area. His best hitter was Turner Elliot who was maybe 5'8" at best but could jump through the gym.
Best potential in college though has to be Iandolo. He has the skills and the height.
Just my two cents and change,
Dave
PS: Never saw Vince Carter play volleyball but since his teams did not exactly do well not sure that he was that great of a volleyball skill player as opposed to just a great athletic talent. Me thinks that Dalhausser of Olympic Gold fame played with Carter on those Mainland High School teams. But I could be wrong.

All good players you listed Dave. It was a different game in Florida when those guys played. We did not have the state's approval nor respect. I remember when they made fun of guys for playing volleyball. The only respectable club was Gold and they are still running strong. We were more interested in beach down in the Southern part of FL. Indoor was set the ball as high as you can and let someone try to hit straight down. I think that the game has slowly progressed throughout the past years. When I watch hs teams play now, I see more enthusiasm and guys who have the respect of the school. This helps a lot with the dynamic of the sport. Although, in my days up in the Chicagoland area, I have to hand it to them. They take it very seriously and always have a number of very good hs players on one team, whereas down here I think there are more athletes that play the game; meaning the skills of players down here do not really progress until college. But I have been impressed with raw ability. Now college coaches are really looking at FL a lot closer than they did in the past. This can be credited to the increase in knowledgeable coaches at the club level, who are marketing their players better than in the past. And I know I always do my part to send out a few emails during the recruiting season to kind of give many of the coaches I know a heads up so to speak. I think Phil learned his basic skills at UCF with Justin and Mike Folstein. I am not sure if he played in hs. I remember that he was very weak on the beach and then all of a sudden he started "kicking some serious butt" with Nick. I was very proud to see a Floridian take the Gold!

Well to go down nostalgia lane...I remember playing against Dalhausser at the Winter Park YMCA on Tuesday nights back in 2000 ish.
My team of old people had them down and out. Dalhausser at 6 foot TOO BIG was the difference. We lost the game but I do remember blocking and hitting around him.
Yeah Phil did get good really really quick and out of no where. Glad a local boy has done good.

how is playing at warner southern a joke...we are one of the top NAIA teams in the nation and compete with some legit d2 and d3 schools. Am i missing something? I love how i played club with CJ and i guess since i played with him everyday i wasnt impressed with his stuff... then when i watch him play in college, and think that he is one of the most disgusting players i have ever seen... Shedrick forbes from Miami Killian was Insane, and is currently playing for Warner Southern which is a joke because he had about 6 D1 schools all over him... Ricky Diaz From Miami Killian was by far the best right side of his era and also went on to play for Warner Southern which was also a joke... Tyler Stevens was my teammate at Miami Killian in 03' and at Westminster in 05' and he led the state 3 years in a row in kills having over 2000 in his 4 years in highschool. he would be a force in college if it wasnt for his chronic back problems. he is getting some split time out at USC now... Evan Romero was by far the best player to come out of north dade. 6'7" with a 35+ veritcal and hit harder than anyone i know. he is currently the leading man out at Stanford with some serious consideration for national player of the year. Mark VanZwieten is probably the most technically sound player ever out of florida aside from his 2 brothers. not too tall, couldnt jump to high but the best player on South Florida during their 3 year reign as a national power. and this was all on one club team... volleyball needs to pick up again and represent...

Just to add my two cents in here on the subject at Warner U.
Warner like a lot of small private schools is not for everyone. But if you want to play collegiate varsity volleyball in Florida this is your option.
I personally know Coach Crawford and think he is a good guy. He is doing good things with both the men's & women's programs. Warner U & Coach Crawford are doing what they can to promote their university and men's volleyball.
Warner offers full rides in men's volleyball, play a national schedule, recruit players internatlionally, and promotes the sport at the community and grass roots level.
It does not have the glamour of UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, or Penn St. but how many other programs do?
You can play competitive volleyball at Warner and you can play with some of the best players this state has produced in recent years. Yeah I know so and so went to LBSU and so and so went to Lewis and so and so went to UCLA. Well the alot of the rest of the players went to Warner and other small schools around the country.
I am not sure how far this program can go in the sport but as the old saying goes Rome was not built in a day. And just to be on the optimistic side who ever heard of Lewis University before they won the NCAA tourney in volleyball? I never heard of the shcool before. Warner like a lot of programs in many sports is just one remarkable year away from being on the map nationally.
As the NCAA commercial always says 200,000+ athletes will be going pro in some other business than sports. Pick your college not based on its volleyball reputation but on its academic reputation. And if you can play varsity volleyball there as, I guess that is BONUS!!!
Lets all be supportive of the one school in Florida that has made a commitment to men's volleyball. For better or worse there is a bunch of guys there playing ball and traveling the country to play ball. That ain't a bad thing. It is a GOOD thing.

High School players should know that just because a college is at the NAIA level, it doesn't mean they are not good. In fact, from my experience it was just the opposite. I played and coached at an NAIA college, and the talent level for both the girls and the guys on the volleyball was unheard of. We had a girl on our team who was 6'3'' and could touch 10'8''! Many of our players for both the women and the men had played in the Olympics for their countries; you get to see a much different kind of player at the NAIA schools who have great players than at the NCAA level.

Dave those and great points and appreciate you comments. For those that want to move on places like Warner and other small schools provide a tremendous opportunity and should be supported.
Thanks again.

Dave is right just because you go to a small school doesnt mean that you should be bashed for it.....alot of good players from florida go to small school around the country and do amazing.....take Colin Kelly for example kid jumps out of the gym and bounces balls and he plays at Lees McRae and was like 4th last year in the nation in kills i think....so it doesnt matter if you go to Penn State USC or UCLA its just the fact that your playing at the collegiate level....great comments Dave
